Meredith House is a new fabric and wallpaper studio founded by sisters Sophie Porter and Celia Haynes as a tribute to their late father

Tell me the background to Meredith House? We founded Meredith House to create a fabric and wallpaper studio that brings a fresh, contemporary perspective to classic British pattern. As sisters, we spent our childhood surrounded by textiles, pattern and beautifully layered homes, so creating a design studio together felt like a natural step

The name is a nod to our father, Charles Meredith Hamer, who spent his career in the interiors trade as managing director of heritage fabric house Jean Monro and director at the Turnell & Gigon Group. Our French mother, Marthe, also had a good eye for interiors. She transformed our family homes in Burgundy and later Normandy with hand-upholstered walls, nostalgic prints and layers of colour, creating spaces that felt warm, welcoming and full of personality

Those influences have stayed with us. Meredith House is really a celebration of the homes we grew up in and the memories attached to them, reimagined with a contemporary twist

From the beginning, we also wanted to do things a little differently. Every design is created in-house and printed to order in the UK on premium cotton, a linen blend and extra-wide wallpaper using responsible production methods. By selling directly through our website rather than traditional showrooms, we’re able to offer beautifully made fabrics and wallpapers without the usual mark-ups, making thoughtful design a little more accessible

Can you describe the debut collection? Our debut collection is a painterly celebration of our family story, with 14 original designs across 114 colourways. It brings together traditional florals, classic stripes, heritage motifs and contemporary geometrics, all inspired by the timeless elegance of English country interiors and French provincial homes

While the collection feels rooted in tradition, we wanted every pattern to have an energy and versatility that allows it to sit comfortably in both classic and contemporary spaces

Creating depth and texture is central to the way we design, so many of the patterns feature layered brushstrokes, painterly details and subtle variations that give them movement and character rather than feeling flat or overly polished

Above all, we wanted the collection to feel joyful, timeless and full of personality, fabrics and wallpapers that people will hopefully love living with for years to come

Did you have a particular house or person in mind when you designed the collection? Not one house or person in particular, more the people and places that shaped our childhood. Our family homes were full of pattern, antiques, books and collected objects, and that’s had far more influence on us than any single reference point

We’re endlessly inspired by British and French decorating traditions, where pattern is used with confidence and rooms are allowed to evolve rather than being finished in one go. We like interiors that feel collected and personal rather than feeling overly styled

A lot of the designs are also named after people, places and things that mean something to us, so the collection has quietly become a bit of a family album.

Have you noticed a resurgence in interest for British craft and textiles? Definitely. We think people are becoming more thoughtful about what they bring into their homes. There’s a real appetite for craftsmanship, quality and products that have a story behind them, rather than simply following the latest trend

Confidence with pattern is back too. Interiors went through a long, pared-back phase, but people want colour and texture and a bit of personality again, something a plain wall just can’t give you. Fabric and wallpaper can transform a room in an afternoon and increasingly people want that transformation to look considered, not mass-produced
