This award winning bathroom design balances period features with a dramatic aesthetic
Earlier this year I was one of the judges for the kbbreview bathroom design awards. The award for project design over £30,000 went to Lukas Kedden at Alfa Tiles in Manchester, and what a well deserved win that was
Lukas created an extraordinary bathroom in a handsome Jacobean house in Buckinghamshire, balancing the period features of the large space, with its curved ceiling and stone mullioned windows, against a practical yet dramatic aesthetic

The client had requested a timeless master bathroom which respected the age of the Manor, using natural and long-lasting materials, with the addition of modern wellness features. The bathroom was last updated in the 1970s
Lukas changed the layout of the room so that the freestanding brass bath from BC Designs is visible as you enter, this also allows the bather too look out of the window at the garden and orchard beyond. A large airing cupboard was incorporated into the space to allow for a walk-in shower and steam room

After researching the style of furniture that would have been used in this period of property, Lukas designed a bespoke twin basin unit in solid wood with English neoclassical dentil cornice, this features a marble top with matching radii to sit naturally on the wood unit
The striking wallpaper is Ibis by Inkiostro Bianco featuring a bespoke continuous pattern of 13m which wraps around the walls. A contrasting deep blue tile is used in the shower room which features heated seats, horizontal jets, a choice of shower heads and steam facility with Effe generator

Brass was used throughout with elements, such as the cistern pipe, plated if a match could not be found. Other details include waterproof speakers, an iroko windowsill and iroko trim on the skirting boards to match the vanity unit
This is the second time Lukas has won at the kbbreview design awards, you can see last year’s winning entry here
