Project: Industrial style bathroom

Lukas Kedden at Alfa Tiles created this extraordinary industrial style bathroom inspired by the interior of a brewery

I don’t normally focus on a single room for the Project section of The Insider, but I was recently a judge at the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards and this bathroom, created by Lukas Kedden at Alfa Tiles is so extraordinary, I felt it justified a whole feature to itself.

The clients, who live in a Victorian terraced house in Ashton Under Lyne, requested an industrial style bathroom ‘themed around a brewery.’ Further, specific requests included a bookshelf next to the toilet, somewhere to sit, an open design with minimal boxing in, space to hang washing, a comfortable bath for two, large basin, exposed pipework, no white plastic and the toilet must also not be white.

To meet the ‘no white’ directive, Lukas’ concept includes iron piping, dark bronze fixtures, slate tiles and an exposed brick wall. He included a PulleyMaid for the washing and open shelving as requested.

Initial challenges included knocking out the chimney breast to accommodate the bath and adding a new window to allow for more natural light. To meet the industrial style bathroom brief Lukas chose Graff vintage oil-rubbed olive bronze taps and shower fittings with bespoke red handles, iron gas pipes (purely decorative) traverse the ceiling and the BC Designs Industrial Boat bath was chosen for its rivet detail and then painted black. There are dark, slate effect porcelain tiles on the floor and concrete effect tiles on the walls. Wood used for the bathroom door and the shelving is oiled Iroko, chosen for its water resistance,

When judging this entry in the kbbreview awards (it won the Best Bathroom Design over £30k category) it was the attention to detail and bespoke solutions that really stood out for me and my fellow judges. The open shelving, basin unit and mirror, window shutters and black metal shower shelves were all made specifically for this project and although there is undoubtedly an industrial feel to the space, it is not so heavily ‘themed’ as to become a parody.
