Hans J. Wegner’s China Chair a modern classic from Fritz Hansen

In celebration of its 80th anniversary, Fritz Hansen has released an exclusive edition of the China Chair by Hans J. Wegner. The China Chair has been in continuous production since 1944 and this latest edition is in oiled European cherry with a Pure leather seat cushion.

Wegner designed the first China Chair on a commission from Fritz Hansen to create affordable furniture that could be easily produced at a time when materials were scarce. His response, inspired by an 18th century Chinese chair, was neither low cost nor easily made. But with the organic curve of its back and light frame, it received accolades when it was shown in the Spring exhibition of the School of Arts and Crafts and has been recognised as a classic example of modern Danish design eversince.

There are just 24 celebratory Wassily chairs available from Aram

Aram has also been in a celebratory mood. The furniture retailer has a new gallery space at its renowned Covent Garden store, which originally opened in 1964, and to mark this 60th anniversary milestone the company has also produced a special edition Wassily chair. This Marcel Breuer classic was the first piece Zeev Aram sold when his store opened. The latest version is in black canvas and Aram has produced just 24 chairs (for 2024) each imprinted with an ARAM 60 2024 stamp.
