It’s all about lights this week, with launches from Lee Broom, Curiousa & Curiousa and Martin Huxford Studio
Lee Broom launched Divine Inspiration at Salone del Mobile, Milan. The lighting collection is inspired by places of worship throughout the ages and the consideration of how light is often linked to hallowed places evoking a sense of stillness, reverence and contemplation.
There are 30 new products in multiple configurations in the collection including carved oak, aluminium and plaster. One of these is Requiem, taking inspiration from the marble drapery on ancient statues. Requiem is a series of limited edition pieces, sculpted by Lee himself in his London factory, by hand dipping fabrics in plaster so that the pieces appear weightless and fluid but are solid in form.
Vintage Siren wall lights are new from Curiousa & Curiousa. The lights are created by layering colourful hand-blown glass with vintage china, available in triple or double layers and two sizes.
Designer Esther Patterson says, “There are so many gorgeous vintage bone china tableware pieces to choose from. The UK has a wonderful tableware heritage dating back over 200 years. These plates, dishes and bowls don’t have to gather dust anymore and can be used to make beautiful statement pieces with a story of their own.“
The Tallis wall sconce from Martin Huxford Studio would bring a sculptural elegance to hallways and stairwells.
Available in two sizes, Tallis is manufactured from natural alabaster and solid bronze with each material presented as opposing smooth curves. The alabaster cuts through the bronze frame so that illumination spreads from both the front and side of the fitting.
British glass lighting studio Rothschild & Bickers has launched Quartz Light, a handblown design crafted using recycled frit.
If, like me, you have no idea what frit is, it is the waste product from the glassblowing process. For this design the handblown cylindrical form is encrusted in the clear glass frit before being re-heated. The resulting lights have a distinctly mid century feel with a crystallised texture. Quartz Light is available in five colours as well as clear. (Read my interview with Victoria Rothschild here)
The Uva pendant light from Ebb & Flow has won the Scandinavian Design Award 2022.
Uva can be hung on its own or used to create a modern chandelier. It is available in a variety of colours and crystal cuts. Ebb & Flow was founded in 2009 to create hand crafted lighting designs.
